What Causes Melasma and How Can I Treat It?

May 10, 2024

Summer is well on the way, while this means more time outdoors for most, those with melasma may be hesitant and those dark spots become the bane of our existence. This common skin condition can be tricky to identify and even trickier to address. Keep reading to understand melasma better and one of our favorite products to include in your skincare routine to keep its appearance at bay while enjoying a great cocktail by the pool this summer!

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a very common skin condition associated with hormones that result in brown or grey-brown patches typically on the face and in areas that get a lot of sun exposure – like the cheeks, forehead, nose and upper lip. Some known causes of melasma are pregnancy, hormonal changes and sun exposure.

How to Treat?

Melasma can be very hard to get rid of so the best thing to do is prevent!  One of the most important things to do when struggling with it is to stay out of the sun, use a SPF (everyday!) and avoid extreme heat (think saunas, etc!).  One of our favorite products to help with melasma is our Dolce Dew Brightening Exfoliating Pads (hyperlink the product here). These are amazing for dull and hyperpigmented skin. They visibly brighten dull skin using a combination of skin-loving acids and natural ingredients to improve discoloration, texture and smoothness! Use these in the morning after cleansing and before any of your serums and SPF.

Pregnant and Melasma?

Melasma is very common skin condition during pregnancy and is even known as the dreaded “mask of pregnancy!” Do not worry - with the right skincare routine and being consistent you can help minimize the appearance!
